AYJ partners with Agenda to raise awareness of the unique challenges posed to young women in the criminal justice system

On Tuesday, 28th June, Agenda and the AYJ hosted a Parliamentary Reception as the final stage of the joint ‘Young Women’s Justice Project’, funded by Lloyds Bank Foundation. The project sheds light on the experiences of girls and women aged 17-25 with experiences of the criminal justice system. The project’s findings highlight the particular pathways of women in contact with the justice system, and their distinct experiences of being disproportionate victims of rape and domestic abuse prior to their contact. The research also shows the intersectional discriminatory risk factors of criminalisation posed to black, Asian and minoritized girls and women.

Following the literature review, briefing papers, and a final report, the parliamentary event platformed young women with lived experience of the criminal justice system, and allowed the project’s findings to be presented to policymakers and key stakeholders.
